Dear sister — I can’t imagine your reaction that day your phone rang. Finding out you weren’t the only lineage of your father––at forty-four years of age.

We never shared secrets–no pinky promises made. But I always dreamed of how nice it might be, having you next to me.

Back then, you didn’t know of my existence.

I question, did our nurturing eradicate our nature?

What was it like, your first kiss? Did you ever wish for a sister?

Life might’ve flowed smoother had we known each other. Perhaps I’d have felt safer, maybe doubted less.

I guess I’ll never know because I was born illegitimate–back when it seemed to matter.

I wonder what it felt like, being adored and loved, belonging to my father’s family, the only child from their son.
