This healthy and guilt-free chocolate brownie batter smoothie is the perfect remedy for those gotta-have-something-chocolate moments. 

Way back when I ventured into the world of raw foods, I made a lot of homemade treats and chocolate smoothies. It’s amazing how delicious healthy can be. Though I no longer follow a raw food diet, I still use what I learned and rely heavily on simple foods with a healthy twist for the day-to-day. 

Back then, one of my favorites was homemade chocolate made with some cocoa, maple syrup, coconut oil, and chopped nuts. All I did was layer it on a baking pan and freeze. Once frozen, I’d break it into pieces and store it in a container.

Easy.

Cocoa is so versatile and good for you. But this Chocolate Brownie Batter Smoothie is a tried and true favorite. Especially when I’m craving a rich and velvety smooth indulgence (that’s secretly good for you). 

There’s so much to love about this smoothie, from its irresistible smooth, rich, and creamy chocolate bliss to the surprise good-for-you ingredients you’ll never guess are there. 

It’s kid-tested and mom-approved. I’d say you might want to keep the ingredients to yourself, but the look of surprise when you tell them what’s in it is kind of priceless. 

Crafting your smoothie 

I always keep the frozen ingredients pre-cut in the freezer so it comes together fast. It’s also quite versatile; you can swap or adjust ingredients to your liking. Flax for hemp seeds, more or less cocoa, maple syrup for dates, almonds for oats, etc. 

If you’re new to this, I suggest starting out with the recipe as is and experimenting from there. 

Flavorful twists 

Do you like Mexican chocolate? Add a touch of cinnamon. Or perhaps a little cayenne for that spicy-sweet kick. I also love throwing in a few strawberries for a chocolate-strawberry twist. Top with a dollop of creamy almond or peanut butter for a chocolaty peanut buttery twist.

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients (except cacao nibs) and any optional ingredients into a high-speed blender;
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  3. Top with cacao nibs and any additional toppings.

Notes

  • Raw cocoa has a more intense and robust flavor and offers more health benefits. Regular cocoa has a milder taste, so the flavor will be slightly different. You can substitute the measurement one for one; though, depending on your preference, you can adjust.
  • Sub maple syrup for Medjool dates if you prefer. Start with 1 tablespoon and increase to 2 if you prefer it sweeter. Adjust to your preference. 
  • Keep ripe peeled bananas and pitted ripe avocados in airtight containers or bags in the freezer. They make provide a creaminess that’s hard to beat.
