Fresh and easy crowd-pleasing guacamole — that’s indulgent and good for you.

The Best Homemade Guacamole Recipe

In our house, fresh guacamole is a weekly staple in our home.

It’s easy, delicious, and healthy, checking off all the weekly staple requirements. We love pairing it with refried black beans, taco salads, nachos, burritos, and all our other favorites.

There are many different ways to make guacamole, like mixing it with white or black beans, yogurt, edamame, salsa, and so on. But this recipe I’m about to share is the best homemade guacamole recipe and the one we always come back to.

As a health coach and parent, I try to ensure each meal I serve offers some healthy nutrients. It doesn’t have to be perfect or rigid, but our daily nutrients add up, and it matters what we eat.

So when there’s an opportunity to give my kids something they love, and it’s packed with nutrients, I include it as often as possible. Guacamole is a dish I feel good about serving for the day-to-day and as a crowd-pleasing appetizer for a party like the Superbowl.

Plus, it comes together in 10 minutes — so quick and easy.

Over the years, I’ve learned the secret to creating irresistible guacamole lies not only in the recipe but also in the love you bring into the process. It’s those little extra touches that make all the difference in mealtime.

So whether you’re having a Mexican-themed family night, hosting a Superbowl party, or casually having a weeknight meal, this is the perfect place to begin.

The Grocery Store: Where Guacamole Magic Begins

Picking the perfect avocado

Great guacamole begins in the grocery store.

Unless you pick ripened avocados, no matter how good the recipe, it’s tough to get it just right. For same-day guacamole, you’re looking for a closer to black than green, plump, just slightly firm avocado. A slight give is ideal— not too much, not too little.

Limes

Limes infuse tanginess and preserve freshness. Choose limes that have some squeeze to them — they have a more generous yield of juice.

A Delicious Indulgence for Your Skin and Health

  • Avocados: High in vitamin C, which supports collagen production. They’re also loaded with healthy fats to help moisturize and nourish the skin.

  • Lime: Rich in vitamin C, which supports collagen production for healthy and radiant skin. Lime also boosts your immune system and supports digestion.

  • Onions: Contains quercetin, which helps reduce inflammation and promotes a clearer complexion. Onions also support heart health.

  • Tomatoes: Rich in vitamin E, known for skin-soothing properties. Tomatoes also offer antioxidants that protect your skin and contribute to a more youthful complexion.

  • Cilantro: Cilantro is rich in antioxidants that promote clear and radiant skin. It also supports all-over digestive health.

  • Garlic: Helps combat free radicals, which helps slow down skin aging. Garlic also boosts your immune system.

A Versatile Staple

Paired with crispy tortilla chips, it’s a classic appetizer. Generously dolloped over a taco salad or tucked in warm corn tortillas, guacamole adds a layer of indulgence that perfectly complements any meal.

Its ability to effortlessly enhance the ordinary has made it a cherished staple in our kitchen.

In the Kitchen Tips

Onions: Opt for red onions for a milder, slightly sweet kick or white onions for a sharper contrast. I like to finely chop the onions for even distribution in the guacamole.

Garlic: For a touch of complexity, mince a clove or two of garlic. Its subtle presence adds a gentle kick and added health benefits. I like to mince garlic finely so it doesn’t overpower the dish.

Peppers: Add jalapenos for heat, adjusting for your taste. Other options that work great are serrano and roasted poblano peppers. For those who prefer mild guacamole, remove the seeds and membranes from the peppers to reduce spiciness.

Tomatoes: Try cherry tomatoes for bursts of sweetness and color. Some may prefer to remove the seeds and excess liquid to avoid making the guacamole too watery.

Mashing: A gentle mash with a masher offers a chunky version, while blending with an immersion blender (just the avocadoes) gives you a smooth and creamy consistency. The choice of texture depends on your personal preference.

Seal of Protection: To ensure your guacamole remains as enticing as the moment it was made, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto its surface before sealing it in an airtight container. This barrier helps minimize air exposure, helping preserve its color.

Citrus: Squeeze an extra bit of lime juice over the top of your guacamole before sealing. This acts as a barrier, slowing down the browning process and helping maintain its appearance.

FAQ

  • Should I keep the avocado pit?

The avocado pit doesn’t actually provide a barrier to prevent browning. The best methods to prevent browning include using plastic wrap directly on the surface, adding extra lime juice, and minimizing the time between prep and eating.

  • How do I fix brown guacamole?

Scrape off the top layer; the underneath is usually fresh. Add lime juice and stir gently.

  • Can I make guacamole creamy without dairy?

Mash avocados well. For extra silkiness, use ripe avocados.

  • How do I make guacamole less tangy?

Reduce lime juice, or you can balance it with a touch of sweetness from diced tomatoes or a hint of maple syrup or honey.

  • Can I store leftover guacamole in the fridge?

Yes, store leftover guacamole in the fridge. Use an airtight container and follow the plastic wrap tip to minimize oxidation. Eat within a day or two for the best quality.
