Starting Over After Divorce: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Life You Love

Discover the powerful question that changed everything for me—plus a step-by-step guide to help you start fresh with clarity and purpose.

A woman planning something.

Starting over after divorce isn’t easy—but it is possible.

This step-by-step guide walks you through a clear path to creating a new life you truly love.

After my 22-year marriage ended, I found myself lost, uncertain, and overwhelmed by a question I couldn’t escape.

Now what?

Starting over felt impossible. I’d poured my heart and soul into my marriage—I had no idea how to rebuild my life. But then I came across one powerful question… and everything began to shift.

Storm of emotions

It wasn’t easy. Divorce unleashes a storm of emotions — fear, self-doubt, and the daunting task of starting over. In those early days, I struggled to make it through the day, paralyzed by the fear of the unknown. Having clarity about the next steps felt almost impossible.

I was in survival mode most days, terrified of making the wrong move. My self-trust was completely gone. I didn’t have the answers—but I knew I couldn’t stay stuck. I had to keep moving, one shaky step at a time.

Finding comfort in the familiar

So I turned to the one place that had always grounded me: the kitchen.

It started with something simple—cooking my kids’ favorite meals. It gave me purpose. A way to feel like I still mattered. I’d stand at the counter, chopping onions and wiping away tears.

Therapy at its best.

Eventually, I began reaching for my headphones to quiet the endless swirl of thoughts. That’s when the voices of Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, and Wayne Dyer started to fill my ears.

Their words became my lifeline.

While the rest of my world felt like it was falling apart, the kitchen remained my steady ground. It was a space where I could still create, still nurture, and still feel like me.

Finding strength in words

The inspirational words I listened to each day became an unexpected source of strength. I didn’t realize it then, but those voices were planting seeds—seeds that would grow into the foundation of my healing and rebuilding.

It wasn’t a straightforward process. Some days I felt strong. Other days, I unraveled. But still—I was moving forward.

Despite the setbacks and tears, I was moving forward; that much was clear. I devoured books, podcasts, and seminars — anything that promised growth and healing. I just wanted to feel better. To find clarity, rebuild my confidence, and find a way through the mess.

Each of those thought leaders challenged me to think beyond my circumstances and start imagining something new.

Something better.

The one question that changed everything

And then, I came across a question that shifted everything.

Of all the advice I consumed, all the words of wisdom from mentors and thought leaders, there was one question that stopped me in my tracks.

It was posed by strategic coach Dan Sullivan, and it was so simple, yet so profound, it completely reoriented my life.

If you're ready to rebuild after divorce, ask yourself this:

“Imagine we’re having this conversation three years from now. You’re looking back on the past three years of your life. What would need to have happened, both personally and professionally, for you to feel truly happy and satisfied with your progress?”

Pause and let that question sink in.

It may seem straightforward, but this question holds the power to completely shift our perspective, from stuck in the past to focused on what’s still possible.

This question forced me to shift my focus to what was still possible ahead.

Instead of asking, What did I lose?
I started asking:

  • What do I want my future to look like?
  • What kind of life do I want to create?
  • What steps can I take to get there?

That was the beginning of everything changing.

I realized I wasn’t just a victim of my circumstances—I had choices. I could design my future. I could create something better.

This question became the foundation of what I now call my vision planning process—a way to reclaim your power, clarify your desires, and build a life that feels fully aligned with who you are becoming.

Reframing the future

This question was reframing at its best.

It pushed me to take ownership of my life. I realized I was capable of reshaping my future—one that aligned with my values, my desires, and who I was becoming.

It sparked something I hadn’t felt in a long time: hope.

Suddenly, I had a framework. A way to not just survive my divorce, but to actually thrive in its aftermath. I began to see that I didn’t have to keep dwelling on the past—I could start focusing on what was still possible.

That one question became an invitation:

  • To plant the seeds of my dreams.
  • To set goals.
  • To take bold, forward-moving action toward a brighter future.

“There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” — C.S. Lewis

Clarity, confidence, and capability

When my marriage first ended, I was at a crossroads, unsure of what path to take. The road I’d traveled for the past 22 years had crumbled beneath me, leaving me lost and uncertain.

I had to make a choice: remain stuck or take the steps towards a better future.

So I sat with Dan Sullivan’s question:
What would need to happen, both personally and professionally, for me to feel truly happy and satisfied with my progress three years from now?

That question became my compass.

It gave me direction when everything else felt unclear. It helped me shift from reaction to intention—to reclaim my power, rewrite my story, and begin creating a life that felt meaningful and aligned.

I could imagine a future filled with clarity, confidence, and capability—and that vision began to pull me forward.

Envisioning the future

Are you ready to design your new beginning?

Imagine yourself three years from now. You’re not just surviving anymore; you’re absolutely thriving. You’re radiating confidence, joy, and a new sense of purpose. The weight of the past has lifted, and you’re stepping confidently into a life that feels authentically yours.

The pain of divorce has transformed into resilience and valuable lessons. You’ve emerged stronger, wiser, and with a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys. You’re aligned with your values, embracing your passions, and building a life that feels good from the inside out.

Sound too good to be true? I promise it’s closer than you think.

This is the power of envisioning your future —and it’s the key to strategically planning and creating a life you truly love.

Our minds are incredibly powerful. When you start imagining a future filled with intention and meaning, you begin planting seeds of possibility. And when those seeds are nurtured with focus and daily action, they grow.

Just like an architect wouldn’t build without a blueprint, you can’t create a fulfilling life without a vision. Your vision is your compass. It helps you make decisions, stay aligned, and stay focused when life throws the inevitable curveballs.

Vision planning that works: The framework that helped me rebuild

To get started, carve out a quiet space where you can let your imagination roam. Grab your favorite notebook or journal, a pen that glides effortlessly across the page, and perhaps a warm cup of tea or a glass of wine to set the mood.

There are no limits here. This is your creation. Your future. Your life.

This guided journaling exercise is the first step to:

  • Building a roadmap to the future you deserve
  • Clarifying your deepest desires
  • Creating intentional goals

Ask yourself:

  • What does your ideal day look like three years from now?
From the moment you wake up to the time you go to sleep—what do you see, hear, smell, feel, and taste? Describe every detail.
  • Where are you living?
In a cozy cottage in the countryside, a loft in a city that never sleeps, or a charming villa?
  • Who’s in your life?
Are you surrounded by close, life-giving friendships? A new partner who loves and accepts you as you are? A family dynamic that feels warm and supportive?
  • What are you passionate about?
What work brings you joy and fulfillment? Are you running your own business, writing a bestselling book, teaching others, or making an impact in your community?
  • What adventures are you experiencing?
Are you backpacking through Europe with a newfound sense of freedom, crafting artisanal bread, or simply finding joy in the quiet moments of sunrise yoga?
  • What new skills have you mastered?
Are you speaking a new language, competing in a triathlon, or building a thriving online community based on your unique expertise?

There are no wrong answers. This is your vision—your blueprint for the life you’re meant to live. Let your full self show up on the page. Be bold. Be honest. Be wildly specific.

We must first know what we want in order to receive it.

Action step: Spend just a few minutes each day visualizing your three-year future. The more real it becomes in your mind, the more your actions will naturally begin to align.

Ask yourself throughout the day: “Is this choice bringing me closer to my vision?” Let your future guide your present—and if it helps, make a vision board and place it somewhere visible as a daily reminder of what you’re working toward.

The power to create a beautiful, aligned future already lives within you.

Mapping out your path

Now that you’ve envisioned the life you want to create, it’s time to turn that vision into clear, doable steps.

This is where the magic of strategic planning comes in—when your dreams stop being abstract and start becoming real.

Think of your vision like a road trip. You know the final destination, but instead of staring at the overwhelming distance ahead, you map it out in reverse. You start with the last major stop before the finish line, then the one before that, and so on—until you’ve traced a clear, manageable route back to where you are now.

When you plan this way, everything feels more achievable. You’re no longer guessing—you’re following a roadmap.

Reverse engineering your goals

This is the process I use again and again in my own life—it’s how I turn the impossible into progress.

Here’s how to break it down:

  1. Milestone goals: What are the big-picture outcomes that bring you closer to your three-year vision?
  2. Break each milestone into steps: What specific actions are needed to hit each major goal?
  3. Create small, actionable tasks: What can you do weekly—or even daily—to keep moving?
  4. Prioritize and set deadlines: Which goals matter most right now? What needs to happen first?
  5. Track your progress: Regularly check in. Celebrate small wins. Tweak your plan as needed.

The key is this: Start with the end in mind. By focusing on your ideal outcome and working backward, you create clarity—and clarity creates momentum.

Your growth plan: personal + professional

Pull out your notebook again, it’s time to start shaping your life with intention. Use these questions as a self-coaching framework to start building your next chapter:

Personal growth:

  • What new hobbies or interests are calling to you?
  • What parts of yourself do you want to strengthen or reclaim?
  • What kinds of relationships do you want to nurture?
  • Which relationships are no longer serving you—and how can you release them with peace?

Professional growth:

  • Where do you see your career heading in the next three years?
  • What skills do you need to develop to get there?
  • What kind of impact do you want to make—and how do you want to feel while doing it?

These questions don’t have to be answered perfectly today. But they are your starting point—a way to begin reconnecting to what you want and where you’re headed.

Empowering yourself to shape your future

The most powerful realization of all?
You have the ability to shape what comes next.

By breaking your big dreams into smaller, doable steps, you shift from “Wouldn’t it be nice if…” to “This is what I’m going to do.”

You're ditching vague wishes and stepping into aligned action.
That’s the magic of intentional living—and strategic vision planning.

Creating your SMART goals roadmap

Now that you’ve envisioned your future, it’s time to bring that vision to life—starting with clear, achievable goals.

Use the SMART method to ground your dreams:

  • Specific – Define it clearly.
Not “get healthier,” but “work out 3x a week and cook at home.”
  • Measurable – Track your progress.
  • Not “learn more,” but “read one self-help book a month.”
  • Achievable – Keep it realistic.
Not “make a million overnight,” but “increase income by 20%.”
  • Relevant – Align it with your values and vision.
Not “get any job,” but “find a career that lights me up.”
  • Time-bound – Set a deadline.
Not “someday,” but “launch my coaching offer by December.”

Every SMART goal is a stepping stone toward the person you’re becoming.

Action Step:
Open your notebook and write down 1–3 SMART goals that align with your three-year vision. Focus on one life area—then build from there.

Taking action: Where transformation begins

Here’s where your dreams meet the real world—when you stop waiting for the perfect moment and begin.

Think of it like a recipe: the ingredients are ready, the instructions are clear… but the magic can only happen when you actually start cooking.

Start small, but start today.

  • Research a course.
  • Reach out to a mentor.
  • Schedule that therapy session.
  • Make a meal plan.
  • Set a budget.

Momentum builds. And once it does, you’ll be unstoppable.

Embrace the power of “yet.”
Don’t say, “I can’t do this.” Say, “I can’t do this—yet.”

Building a support system

You don’t have to do this alone.

  • Mentors & coaches – Find someone who's been where you want to go. My holistic life coach was a game-changer during my healing.
  • Mastermind groups (love this one!) – Join a circle of people who challenge and support you. They’ll hold you accountable and help you dream bigger.
  • Friends & family members – Let the people who love you show up for you. Whether it’s emotional support or practical help, don’t be afraid to receive it.

Embrace new challenges

Growth never happens in the comfort zone.

  • Step outside it: Take risks, try something new, be okay with falling forward.
  • Embrace uncertainty: Some of the best moments come when we least expect them.
  • Build resilience: The path won’t be perfect. Keep learning, adjusting, and moving forward.

Action Step: Take one bold step this week—enroll, apply, say yes, or even say no where you need to. Each move forward rewrites your story.

Join that dance class you’ve always wanted to try or sign up for that online course. Take a leap of faith and watch your dreams unfold. Perhaps most importantly, never give up on your dreams.

“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

Action steps & empowerment

This is the time for practical tips and empowered action. Take the best advice you can gather—and apply it. Set personal goals. Write out your action plan. Make space for practical advice that supports the version of you you’re becoming.

If you’ve never set boundaries before, now’s the time. It's a good idea to prioritize your long-term goals over short-term comfort. Little by little, the new things you try will compound into real change.

Legal & financial logistics

While you're rebuilding emotionally, don’t forget the practical side of the divorce process. Seek legal advice, especially from a divorce attorney who understands division of assets and child support.

Meet with a financial advisor to develop a strong financial plan for financial security. Separate bank accounts, monitor your credit card activity, and review your divorce settlement carefully. Financial support and health insurance are part of your foundation now.

Understanding the process of divorce isn’t easy, but clarity brings peace.

Note: This list is a general guide, not legal or financial advice. Always consult professionals for your unique situation.

You have the power to rebuild

Divorce may feel like an ending, but it can also be the beginning of a story you love living.

Dan Sullivan’s question gave me the power to stop spinning in the past and start planning the future. What started as survival turned into vision, purpose, and joy.

And it can for you too.

If you’re feeling lost or overwhelmed, I encourage you to ask yourself this powerful question and commit to doing the work. It’s easy to believe things will somehow improve on their own, but transformation doesn’t happen by accident.

It happens by choosing courage over comfort, day after day.

Remember

  • Rebuilding is a process. Be gentle.
  • Celebrate small wins. They matter.
  • Prioritize your mental health and well-being holistically—mind, body, spirit.
  • Don’t hesitate to get professional support.
  • You are more capable than you think.

The life you want isn’t just possible—it’s waiting for you to claim it.
