In the kitchen tips

  • If you want a less sweet mug cake, reduce the sugar by 1 tablespoon.
  • For those wanting lower sugar options, try substituting coconut sugar with stevia or monk fruit sweetener. Make sure to use conversion charts, as these sweeteners are often sweeter.
  • Add a sprinkle of chia seeds or flaxseeds for extra nutrition without compromising the taste.
  • Microwaves vary greatly in power. Start with the recommended 2 minutes and 10 seconds but feel free to adjust. The idea is to get a gooey center without overcooking the edges.

FAQ

Can I substitute the flour?

Yes, you can use whole wheat pastry flour for a more wholesome version.

Can I make this recipe without a microwave?

Definitely. You can bake it in an oven at 350°F for about 12-15 minutes.

Is this recipe vegan?

Yes, just make sure your chocolate chips are vegan too.

What are the benefits of using coconut sugar over granulated sugar?

Coconut sugar has a lower glycemic index, meaning it’s a good choice for managing blood sugar levels. However, because it’s less sweet, some may want to adjust the amount used to match taste preferences.
